Detect and Remove Keyloggers

What is A Keylogger?

A keylogger is a computer program that logs each keystroke a user types on a keyboard and saves this data into a file or transfers it via the Internet to a predetermined remote host. It also can capture screenshots of user activity, log passwords, record online chat conversations or take different actions in order to find out what a user is doing. A keylogger poses the most dangerous threat to user privacy.

A keylogger can be also a small physical device that usually is placed between the keyboard’s plug and the computer’s keyboard port. A hardware keylogger records all keystrokes and saves them into own memory. Such a device doesn’t rely on a particular software or driver and therefore works under different environments. However, it doesn’t take screenshots and can be easily found during a thorough computer inspection.

Software keyloggers are divided into parasitical and legitimate applications. Malicious keyloggers are very similar to viruses and trojans. They are used by hackers to violate user privacy. Legitimate keyloggers, also known as computer surveillance tools, are commercial products targeted mostly to parents, employers and teachers. They allow to find out what children or employees are doing online. However, even legal programs work without the monitored user’s knowledge and consent. They can be also used by malicious persons and therefore are not classified as less harmful threats than the actual parasites.

Slow PC performance Slow PC performance. Having even as few as one or two types of Keyloggers can clog your bandwidth causing sluggish computer performance. Because types of Keyloggers secretly operate in the background, you won't be able to easily detect them. Noticeable problems like computer taking long periods to turn on or a slow Internet connection - are signs that your computer may have Keyloggers.

New desktop shortcuts or homepage New desktop shortcuts or homepage. Keyloggers may add new desktop shortcuts or even change your settings to redirect your default homepage to point to another site. If you want your computer to be spyware-free, you must remove all traces of Keyloggers.

Bombarded with annoying popups. Keyloggers may bombard your computer with popup ads. Keyloggers may prevent regular Internet activity and even track your surfing habits as well as your personal information. Remove Keyloggers immediately because the more traces of Keyloggers you have the more popups you'll see on your computer.

Instructions:

Step1:
Enable your firewalls. This is especially important if you are hooked up to a DSL/Broadband connection. Firewalls are designed to prevent outside access to your computer. Being constantly connected to the Internet makes you even more vulnerable to keylogging hackers. A firewall won't stop the keylogger in a literal sense, but it may help prevent the transmission of the information back to the hacker.
Step2:
Install anti-spyware and anti-virus software. Keylogger spyware often invades your PC system via viruses, Trojans and other malware. Your anti-spyware and antiviral are your first line of defense. A number of open-source and commercial applications are available online, to clean out any keyloggers that they detect.
Step3:
Obtain and use an automated form-filler, particularly if you often enter personal or financial information at any website. These form fillers encrypt and save this confidential information and automatically fill it in, so you won't have to type it in.
Step4:
Consider using an on screen keyboard. You would enter your information into this keyboard using your mouse rather than typing it in. Key-logging software can only record information that is typed in rather than entered with your mouse. Speech recognition software would serve the same purpose, as no keystrokes or mouse movements can register.
Step5:
Get an alternative keyboard layout. Most of the keylogger software available is based on the traditional QWERTY layout. If you use a layout such as DVORAK, the captured keystrokes do not make sense unless converted.
Step6:
Keep track of the programs that are running on your computer. Keyloggers tend to run in the background, out of sight. You can check the programs via the Task Manager by pressing (Ctrl + Alt + Delete). Your USB port and computer games such as the PS2 have been used to install keylogger software.
Step7:
Use a one time password (OTP). An OTP is key logger proof, because once it is used, it is automatically invalidated. This is especially helpful if you are using a public computer.
